Kin Itinerary

This fascinating itinerary features Literary Heroes, Opulent Estates, Traditional Fodder, and Luxury accommodation

Activity 1|Seamus Heaney HomePlace & Openground

Seamus Heaney is recognised as one of the major poets of the 20th Century. This exhibition discovers how his HomePlace in Bellaghy shaped his life and was a source of inspiration throughout his career. Seamus Heaney HomePlace takes you on an inspiring journey through the life and work of one of Irelands greatest writers.

Following a visit to the exhibition, visitors will explore Seamus Heaney Openground, an authentic experience centred on five locations that inspired Seamus Heaney’s work and a natural extension of the HomePlace offering. Each location tells the visitor a story about the place they are visiting. Experienced guides add an extra, rich layer of interaction with the places and landscape where visitors hear directly how each of the five locations held great significance for Seamus Heaney.

Activity 2|Ballyscullion Park Estate

Ballyscullion Park is a private historic house and estate situated in the north of Ireland in quiet, unspoilt countryside, surrounded by ancient woodland and breath-taking views over Lough Beg. The estate has a fascinating history that can weave Jane Austin, Napoleon and the Earl Bishop of Derry together.  It is a Ramsa site, and Site of Special Scientific Interest owing to the richness and diversity of flora and birdlife. At the southern end of the strand, surrounded by the Lough on one side and wetlands on the other, is the ancient historic monument, Church Island.

The Estate has been the home of the Mulholland family for many years. Richard will give the group a fascinating insight of the history of the Estate and the family, with their long-standing involvement in the linen industry.

Bronagh from Bakehouse NI will deliver a seasonal foraging and sampling experience on the estate for ingredients she uses in her famous breads, jams and slo-gin. Bakehouse is a homely, countryside cookery school offering classes and experiences in cooking, baking and foraging using local, seasonal ingredients and family recipes.

Following the tour and foraging experience, guests will enjoy an exclusive lunch in the family home.

Accommodation Option

Visitors will depart Ballyscullion Park and travel the short distance to The Glenavon House Hotel.  After settling into the accommodation, visitors can enjoy the spa and gardens, before a 3-course dinner.
