Two-day Itinerary Exploring Historical Mid-Ulster

In Gaelic, dùtchas means “a deep-rooted connection” and we believe this itinerary epitomises this.

This 2-day itinerary offers a real insight to the history and heritage of the area. Visitors will connect with the landscapes, the heritage and the passion of the Loughinsholin members.

Activity 1 | The Emigrants Walk

Discover The Emigrants Walk, which is led by local expert guide, Cathy O’Neill, who has a real passion for the local stories and legends.  Follow the trail of Emigrants fleeing the horrors of the Famine and making their way to the boats to escape to the New World.  This guided walk up the Carntogher Mountain tells a poignant and emotional story of the famine and emigration in South Derry.

Walking up the Carntogher mountain is like taking a step back in time.  As the path meanders up the mountain towards the Emigrant’s Cairn the landscape around you remains pretty much the same as it was when 1000’s of people walked the very same path.  Over 2 million people left Ireland during “An Gorta Mór”, sailing to Canada, U.S.A, Australia, England and Europe. Derry was the second largest port after Cork for ships travelling to North America. Many of those travelling to the Derry Port walked this path, creating a very emotional experience to walk in their footsteps.

Activity 2 | Friels Bar & Restaurant

Following your walk you will meet Dermot Friel of the Historic Friel’s Bar and Restaurant, which was used as a soup kitchen during the famine. Here you will not only see an authentic Famine Pot, you will also taste the Nettle soup that would have been served and learn more about local emigrants.

It’s then time to warm up fireside in Friel’s, where you will enjoy lunch in one of Ireland’s oldest and most traditional pubs. Friel’s is a 5th generation traditional Irish family run pub, steeped in history and offering a very warm welcome to all guests.  Untouched, unspoiled and unchanged.

Activity 3 | Glenshane Country Farm

After lunch, it’s time to visit Glenshane Country Farm where you can take in the beautiful surroundings of the Maghera countryside. Prepare to be amazed at the skill and commitment of talented working dogs in a highly entertaining sheepdog demonstration. Feel the connection between the 4th-generation owner Shepherd, Jamese, and these beautiful border collies as they bring the flock into the pen while he gestures, whistles and uses verbal commands. A natural storyteller, Jamese shares insights into farming life and his personal family history. You will also have the opportunity to help in the shearing demonstration with Jamese and may even get to hold a baby lamb.

Accommodation Options

After a busy day in the South Derry countryside, you can settle down for the evening in either Ardtara Country House or Walsh’s Hotel for a delicious dinner. and a peaceful night’s sleep.
